AIA Gold Medal Award Winner, Hilltop Barn: Summit, NJ
Dating back to the turn of the 20th Century, this former barn had fallen into a state of disrepair. As part of a larger renovation to this hilltop estate, the structure was envisioned as part of the landscape by restoring its traditional barn character to serve as a 2-car garage and loft space.
Overgrown vegetation was removed and the side elevation facing the lawn was given a door, additional windows, a new dormer, and pergolas to connect to the lawn as an element within the landscape.
Other aspects of the renovation include a new roof, board and batten siding, small shed roofs and barn shutters. The former hay loft space was renovated as a hobby room with an expansive view of the yard and the valley beyond. This project was part of a major home restoration.
While the main house was renovated as a higher-style Italian Renaissance estate, we intentionally maintained this building as a simple, yet elegant, agrarian structure that anchors and frames the rear yard.
